Athletic eligibility
The problem
This is one of the funniest, least obvious ones. Athletic directors have systems for deciding whether a kid is working hard enough in school to play football on Friday night. Those systems depend on grades.
But in a competency-based system, at the beginning of the semester, kids might have all ones. And that's exactly where they're supposed to be! They haven't learned the stuff yet. But it looks bad.
So how do you determine athletic eligibility?

How educators have handled it
Different schools, different approaches. None of these is the one right answer.
